The Golden Road
Born to musical parents, I was, however, the only one of three brothers drawn to music. My earliest lessons were on the piano, though I never progressed beyond Grade 3. Locked in a room to practice scales, I often wandered in my imagination, picking up the popular tunes of the day and experimenting with chords. Even then, perhaps instinctively, I sensed that one day I would be a songwrite.
A school friend, the remarkable baritone saxophonist Ronnie Ross, opened my ears to the world of bebop. Later, while training for a dental career at Guy’s, I refused to let music fade. At 20, I formed a band and spent my student years playing semi-professionally around London. Though I knew music could never provide a secure livelihood, it nourished my spirit, while my dental career offered the stability I needed.
Over time, I found myself composing themes that resonated with people—almost landing hits with artists like Vince Hill and Matt Monro. In the early 1980s, my work expanded to writing for two shows, a period that would become a golden chapter in my musical life. Many of these compositions, along with a few newer ones, were beautifully orchestrated by the extraordinary Brighton pianist and arranger Mark Edwards. Together, we produced my first successful record, The Golden Road, released in October 2025.
Today, I am once again immersed in creating a new album, collaborating with a line-up of world-class musicians to bring these pieces to life. Music has always been both my constant companion and my passion, weaving its way inexorably through every chapter of my life.
